Opinions of College Freshmen

The Higher Education Research Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles recently reported results of its annual survey of college freshmen. The survey gathered the opinions of 240,580 freshmen who entered 340 colleges and university this past fall.

79% of the freshmen agreed strongly or somewhat that through hard work, anyone can succeed in American society. 47% agreed that undocumented immigrants should be denied access to public education. 48% felt that affirmative action in college admissions should be abolished.

We are heartened that so many of the freshmen believe that effort pays off. The other results reflect the schism in American society at large. Where do you stand?

Working hard, and smart, will allow anyone to succeed in American society. You have to want success and be willing to put forth the effort to achieve it. No one is going to hand it to you on a silver platter. But those people who are diligent in their efforts will find that hard, and smart work does pay off.
