Study Tip Archive - April, 2007

"The problem of when to study is critical. A good rule of thumb is that studying should be carried out only when you are rested, alert, and have planned for it. Last minute studying just before a class is usually a waste of time."

Tell your friends you are studying and need quiet time."

"Go to the library! Turn the cell phone off. It is amazing how fast you can advance in your studying than if you are home, even if you turn off the tv, radio, phone. If it is the middle of the night and you still haven't finished studying and you are falling asleep, GO TO REST! Sleep for a couple of hours and wake up at 4-5 am to continue studying. After taking a shower you will be surprised how much and how fast you can learn so early in the morning, and you will retain more from what you studied one day before than if you do not sleep at all. Just set up the alarm clock so you do not oversleep so you can finish what you need for the test."

Maria H.
Parent

"I am only in year eight and have school every single day of the week. This means more homework than I can handle. My tip is practice, practice, practice, and more PRACTICE, trying to avoid TV and the computer. Buy books or ask for extra tutoring. It really helped me and I improved a lot. So just sit down and do work, work, WORK. If you are on holiday you might as well work too. But try to eat healthy and become active to have the strength to do the impossible!"

Maria Zhang

"I find that concentration in studying, or any academic activity, for that matter, is key. In order to get studying, writing an essay, etc. done, I make sure I do not get out of my chair. This gets rid of all distractions, like getting to up watch TV or get food, and almost always guarantees that I will focus on what I am supposed to do and get the job done."

Chris F.
Student, 11th Grade
Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
April 15, 2007

"Guys, when studying the first thing you have to do is say to yourself today I am going to study and state your goal and know why you want to study. Make a timetable for yourself and study in short bursts every day. I sometimes get a chapter of science done in four hours a night. Enjoy what you are doing. Use mnemonics a lot. Try to find what kind of learner you are. There are 3 types of learners. They are kinesthetic, auditory, and visual learners. If you find what kind of learner you are it will be much easier for you to learn and study and you will enjoy it more."

Mahmut Aytekin
Student, 10th Grade
Melbourne, Australia
April 15, 2007

"I am a very visual person and when I decided to go back to school, I
wanted anything I knew I would go back to often to be easily accessible. I found colored adhesive tabs for all of my books, including my notes that I could label in my words and get to easily during class and during tests. It has helped me tremendously."

"Try to learn your perfect environment for studying. Many people find it easier to read in an environment that others don't. I myself have a friend who loves to read with heavy metal music. And he is also a good student. That is why you should pick a suitable place for reading. Use a big space to read. Use a big table for making notes. Many people like to read in the garden, roof, or an open place. That's why you should pick a good place for you and start reading. The environment influences your study."

Justin Junaid

Justinian I.

DaMonique M.

"What I do to study is I use note cards. I find this a lot easier than
any other way possible. If you are a visual learner this is for you. You can use
different colors so that you remember things from the colors. I don't know if
this will work for you but it works for me."

Brittany Thornton
Student, 10th Grade

I solve as many problems as possible and review questions from past tests to make sure I will be able to answer questions on a test of a similar level. I try to cover all the topics. In case there is no time, I just read a few chapters one or two times."

Lakshmi V.

Jessica B.

"When I want to study I say to myself, 'Mark, you don't want to be doing this ALL night.' I have ADD and it is hard to focus. Doing this reminds me of the reality of not focusing. You may want to try it. If you don't get it done, just be honest with your authority figure. They should or hopefully will understand and be human. We all have faults."

Mark H.

Sam Dedes
Student, 7th Grade

"When you study a chapter for an exam, review it frequently until the time of the exam, even if the exam is a year away. You don't need to review the whole chapter, but you can review only the skeleton of the chapter. Use mnemonics to remember information presented in the form of numbers and other difficult information you frequently forget."

Ahmad Solaiman
Postgraduate Physician
Mansoura, Egypt
April 3, 2007

"When you study, try to study in a place where you won't get distracted by things like a TV, phones, or a computer (unless you need to use the computer to study). If you do use a computer for studying, DON'T LOSE FOCUS. If you go on the computer to do a research paper, don't end up playing solitaire. There's a big chance that you would not do good on the paper. And also, if you are the kind of person who likes to procrastinate, try to plan something like going to the movies after you study. That way you would want to get studying over with and you would actually do it, even though its just because you want to do something afterwards. At least you are done."

Sarah C.
Student, 7th Grade
Freeport, New York, USA
April 2, 2007

"When taking a test:

1. Review the entire test looking to see how many points each problem is worth.
2. Begin each problem:

a. Read it fully without writing anything down - writing information down before you read the entire problem tends to lead to assumptions about the problem and missed information.
b. Highlight key information.
c. Write down key information.
d. Begin to solve the problem.
e. Move on if you struggle at all.
f. Check time and move swiftly; don't take an extraordinary amount of time on any particular problem.

3. Review the test and make sure you put your name on it."

Brad Ahrens
Student, College
Issaquah , Washington, USA
April 2, 2007

Raja S.
Student, Second MBA

"Always try to read in a comfortable place. If you read in a uncomfortable place you'll lose attention and that won't help you study. While taking notes choose a big table. I myself use a computer table with big space and shelves. Play music if it helps you to concentrate but not on high volume."
