Study Tip Archive - June, 2007

"We forget things we dislike. So to remember what you have studied, try to put in complete interest into it. We mostly never forget our favorite movie lines or the lyrics of our favorite song. Make studying something like that, in that way you can score really well!"

"You're smart, you're well-educated, but there's ALWAYS ways to improve. A good breakfast is one of the answers. Don't just snatch a chocolate bar or a drink can. Those who do that perform equivalent as average 70-year-olds. Plus, have a good sleep. You need some time to process - memories. Sure, you need to race time (to study), but stop once in a while. And I mean, ONCE IN A WHILE."

"If you're about to take a test or a review of some kind, make flash cards. But the trick to making flash cards is to put them on colored paper. What helps me is I think of the color of the card and then it helps me remember the question and answer. Tip 1 --- If you can, get a preview of the test from your teacher so you know what you need to study and then make flash cards. or, just ask your teacher what area of the chapter the test will be on, so you at least have an idea of what to study. Tip 2---if there aren't that many questions to answer, try and put each question on a different colored card so it is easier to remember the questions and answers."

"If you are studying for your final exam, what you have to do is sit somewhere comfy, and organize your stuff. Then get to studying. What you have to do is read over what you have over and over aloud. It works. If you are stressed, study for an hour or two straight and then take a 15-20 minute break and get back."

"DO NOT LEAVE STUDYING UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE! I cannot stress that enough. I often leave studying until the the night before and I always get a lower then when I start studying a week before. My best study tip is to get on computer and type up all your notes, then print them and study from them. By doing all this you get a lot more information in your head."

"I try to make sure that when I study I am away from the TV or any other distraction. Also studying on a bed is bad because it will make you feel sleepy and you'll probably doze off. Also try not to start studying in the last two weeks. Start studying from the beginning of the year. Studying 60-90 minutes a day and revising the day's work will help a lot."

"Read over and over again whatever you're trying to learn. If it's memory also try to remember over and over again what it is that needs to be remembered. Do not wait until the last minute. If you do, it's like trying to play chess without knowing what the pieces do. Remember the 4 Ps: Poor Planning leads to Poor Performance. Or, if you fail to plan then plan to fail. Read, study, play, and learn ahead of time."

"I find it very helpful and useful to write information down on a bit of coloured card and cut to size and stick in on my wall. The reason why I find it helpful is because the colour attracts my attention and also helps remind me of the bit of information I need to remember. Try it girls and boys. It might be very helpful."

"Believe it or not, being a little bit stressed about the exam actually helps! If you feel too relaxed about the test or exam, you won't study as hard. You'll normally just skim over the notes and your attention span will be shorter than ever. Don't pull your hair out, but a little bit of healthy anxiety can do the trick. Of course, you can't force this. All you can do is convince yourself that you do in fact need to study and that you actually don't know everything about it. Oh, and don't get distracted! Especially if you're using the computer. Good luck!"

"If you are studying for finals this is what you have to do! Pick up a pencil or pen and look at your study guide or packet if you have one. Get excited about what you are about to learn, then it is interesting. When you have studied for an hour or more, take a 15-20 minute break. Then study again. Trust me, it works!"

"My father said the ideal time to study is around 7.30 a.m. till 11.30 a.m. I think it's because our mind is usually more 'fresh' and alert in mornings. The foods you take also determine how much your brain acts like a sponge to absorb things you've studied. So, maintain a healthy diet and try to reduce your junk food intake. Good luck!"

"The main thing to adhere to when you're about to study in class or in your room, is to maintain a positive attitude and don't stress. If you're being negative and stressing, there's no point of even studying! You also have to be comfortable in the place you're studying. Make sure you've a comfy seat. Another great tip is to write your notes in colorful pens. It could attract your attention and help you concentrate. But keep to few colors. Also, make sure they're clean and neat. It would also help if your notes are in shorter forms and not in long sentences or paragraphs because you would lose your attention to read. Good luck!"

"A lot of us lose sight of why we are studying to begin with. A personal motivation of mine is popping in a DVD of a favorite show that centers around a certain career right before I get down to studying. For instance, I want to become a pharmacy technician, or something else in the medical field, so I'll watch Grey's Anatomy for a couple episodes before my study time. Getting into the mind set of what you want to be as the end result of all your hard work is one of the best motivations I've ever come across. It's all about keeping your eye on the prize."
