Study Tip Archive - May, 2007
"One of the best study tips I have is to quiz yourself on the night before a quiz or test, right before you go to bed. Just cover up the answers so you can remember them easier. Not only do they stay in your mind when you go to bed, but you will remember them when you wake up, so chances are, you'll do better on your test."

"Believe in yourself and that you can do what you are trying to do. Don't let anyone or anything distract you. Explain to family members that you are trying to study and want them to respect that! Don't stress! Stressing is the worst thing possible and will distract you from what you are doing. By the end of your study session you will have forgotten everything. Remember to take short breaks."

"A good way to study is to make CORNELL NOTES or C-NOTES. A C-NOTE is a note where you fold a paper 3/4 across. On the left side you write a question and on the right side you write the answer and you fold it and quiz yourself. And if you choose to, on the bottom you can write a summary on what you have learned about."

"In everyone's studies, it's quite possible to fact abstract and extremely theoretical subjects. Nevertheless, I realize now that I have absolutely to cope with such situations. It's not useful to think that such or such subject is unimportant. The different and numerous subjects are interdependent. Let us admit that and enjoy the whole of our studies, regardless of the fact they are hard or not! Last, I feel always much better when I look at the practical side of a subject; computer tools for example, or merely everyday life needs."

"To study you have to concentrate on what you're doing and have soft
music in the background. For me, to study I have to have medium type music because that's what I'm used to. Must people have different styles of studying!
But really if you want to study you mostly have to get away from all the noise
in the place/room you study and study in quiet."

"It all depends on what kind of learner you are. Once you have this
figured out you will be able to study in the most effective manor. I personally
need to study in a space with no noise or no distractions (this includes food).
Pictures also help me out a lot. Make notes on the topic you are studying and
review them over a number of days. Don't wait until the last minute! Pace
yourself!"

"If you find it hard to start with a topic, just drink two glasses of water and then start reading aloud and keep reading until you think you can concentrate. Then you can stop reading aloud. This works even with practical subjects like mathematics where you can read the theory part. Since we generally ignore theory in math (at least here we do), the concepts we are trying to learn are clear. Try this out and you will see you have a stronger foundation."

"Here is a tip to build vocabulary. Before you start reading just take a minute and decide beforehand that you are going to read 5 or 10 pages before you take a break. After you have marked the pages, just swiftly go through the contents and underline the words whose meaning you don't know or are not very clear. After you have done this, go and look up the meanings of not more than 10 words. If you do this for too many words, it is highly likely that would find this exercise boring and won't do it again. Write down these meanings in your notebook and look up the meanings of the other words in your next study session."

"To study we have to concentrate our mind on books continuously but, it's not always possible to concentrate for hours. So we have to work while studying. First, select your textbook, then start from first page. Until you complete that first page, don't go to the next page. Use a pencil while studying to underline important sentences. Understand them, then write your own notes about what you understand on that page. In this way you are doing some work while studying so that you can concentrate for hours."
