Class Rules

It is important to have class rules. These should be in place from the very beginning of the school year, and posted in clear view.

Teachers tend to make two mistakes when setting class rules. They often have too many rules, and the rules are often general rather than specific. Here are five rules we regard as essential.

  1. Come to class on time with all the materials you need.
  2. Follow directions immediately.
  3. Raise your hand when you wish to speak.
  4. Request permission to leave your seat.
  5. Respect the other students and their property.

Notice that these five rules are within the control of a student. Also note that the rules are stated in positive terms rather than DO NOTS.
