New Vocabulary for 2011

Each year, some new words and expressions make their way into dictionaries. Here are some that made it in 2010. Your students should know their meanings to keep up with the times.

  • staycation (noun) - vacation spent at home.
  • microblog (verb) - to post very short entries on a blog.
  • riff (verb) - to expound on a particular subject.
  • flash mob (noun) - brief gathering for a common purpose, announced by email or text.
  • rock (verb) - to do something in a confident, flamboyant way.
  • green-collar (adjective) - of or relating to workers in the environmentalist business sector.
  • buzzkill (noun) - person or thing that has a depressing effect.
  • sheeple (noun) - unquestioning followers.
  • chillax (verb) - to calm down or relax.
  • cheeseball (adjective) - lacking taste or style.

Have your students find other words and phrases that made it in 2010.
