Learning about Libraries

Even in the age of the Internet, libraries remain an important resource. Your students are most likely familiar with their school library. They should be equally familiar with their local public library or libraries. A field trip to a local library can be both informative and fun. Arrange such a trip with a librarian in advance. Ask the librarian to explain and demonstrate the many resources available. Resources include research assistance, special events, and DVD rentals. Be sure to ask the librarian to explain how books can be located. If any of your students do not have a library card, encourage them to get one while there. Emphasize to your students the appropriate behavior they should display while at the library, in particular, that of maintaining the quiet atmosphere typically observed in a library.
