Buzzwords 2011

Learning buzzwords is a fun way for students to keep up with what's happening around them.  In a previous teaching tip (12/28/09) we presented buzzwords that became popular in 2009.  Here are some buzzwords that have become popular in 2011.

  • cosmeceutical - a cosmetic product whose ingredients have a beneficial effect.
  • freemium - a business model in which the basic product is free, but extra features are not.
  • jorts - short trousers that look like jeans but which end at or above the knees.
  • paliday - a holiday that is spent with friends or family.
  • hypermiling - driving a vehicle in a way that uses less fuel.
  • tweetheart - a user of Twitter who is liked and admired by other users.

Have your students identify other new buzzwords.
