Each of the following people was born in the month of December. Have your students use reference sources to identify the year in which each was born and what the most famous accomplishment of each was.

  • Eli Whitney (1765 - invented the cotton gin).
  • Clarence Birdseye (1886 - developed a process for freezing foods).
  • Clara Barton (1821 - founded the American Red Cross).
  • Louis Pasteur (1822 - developed the process of pasteurization which destroyed harmful bacteria in foods and beverages).

Here is one that is just for fun:

  • William Semple (1869 - invented chewing gum).
