Students like and need consistency. You can provide consistency by establishing a routine for your classes. By sticking to the routine your students will be comfortable in knowing what to expect throughout the class.
Your class routine should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. A good way to begin your class is to ask a question about something you taught the previous day. Doing this will jog your students’ memories and provide a segue into your lesson for the day.
The middle part of the routine is the lesson you are teaching that day. Be certain that students have had adequate preparation for the lesson and clearly understand what they must do.
The end part of the routine includes sharing and assessment. Call on students to share the most important things they learned and found most interesting. Respond to any questions students have. Then ask two or three questions of your own to assess what your students have learned.
