Explicit Teaching

Explicit teaching involves your directing students’ attention to specific learning; e.g. developing a thesis statement. The method focuses on creating specific learning outcomes.

All topics are broken down into smaller, manageable parts and are then taught individually. Typically, a teacher who uses explicit teaching will use explanation, demonstration and practice. All topics must be taught in logical order. After a skill has been taught and modeled, the students then can build on this knowledge through practice, collaboration and other hands-on activities.

• State the reason for learning; e.g. to learn how to graph statistics.
• Provide instruction to the students.
• Provide modeling and demonstration to students.
• Guide the students’ hands-on applications of the learning.
• Allow students to practice until they have attained independence in the task or skill.
