Overcoming Study Barriers

Many  students avoid studying  because of barriers they place upon themselves.  These barriers can be easily overcome.  Teach your students to recognize these barriers and how to overcome them.

  • Hungry. Studying takes energy.  A student will not have much energy if he or she is experiencing a low blood sugar level.  Tell your students to have a snack before they start studying.  Encourage them to have some healthy snacks available when studying.
  • Tired.  A student may not be able to focus and concentrate if he or she is tired.  Tell your students to take a short nap (10 or 15  minutes) before they begin to study.
  • No time.  Teach your students to use a planner in which they identify specific times for studying.
  • Too much going on. A student may not study if he or she is surrounded by many fun things to do.  Teach your students to study in a quiet place that is free from distractions and interruptions.
  • Uncomfortable.  It is hard for a student to concentrate if he or she is too warm or too cold.  Teach your students to identify a study place in which the temperature is just right for them.
