Using Time-Out

Time-out is a discipline procedure in which a disruptive student is physically removed from the setting in which he or she is being disruptive. It can be a very effective procedure if used correctly. Follow these guidelines when using time-out.

• Use time-out only for disruptive behaviors. Do not use time-out for such things as lateness or failure to complete homework.
• Limit the period of time-out to no more than 10 to 15 minutes.
• The time-out area should not be stimulating, but it should be secure and comfortable.
• Be certain that the student can be observed by you or an aide while serving time-out.
• Allow the student to simply rejoin the class when the time-out period is over.
